  • Non of this is real. It is a space made out of memories and imagination, where interior and exterior interacts by creating a diverse reality. I am interested in a moment where representation meets abstraction. I chose recognizable objects to create a sense of presence and personhood.

A View from Nowhere

Oil on wood panel

This painting started as a window view of the backyard of the Art Gallery of Ontario, but ended up as something else. It was a certain feeling and mood in that view, which tempted my attention. Hoverer that feeling wasn’t there for me to take, I had to create it. I started to take away things from the existing painting and invent my own shapes and colours to translate what I was feeling. The decision to step back from the former image opened up a possibility for a fresh process, which turned into the dialogue between the painter and the painting.

My space is made out of memories, experiences and fantasies. Some subjects are

fragments from my past in Lithuania, some are visualizations of places that moved me, other

areas are intuitively improvised. I am creating a space which doesn’t exist, but it is charged with feeling. I hope the viewer can live the vicarious experience.

My space is made out of memories, experiences and fantasies. Some subjects are fragments from my past in Lithuania, some are visualizations of places that moved me, other areas are intuitively improvised leading by a sense of presence. None of the objects are fully representational, because they came out of flashbacks or are imaginative. I am creating a space which doesn’t exist, but my goal is to convince the viewer so he or she would feel invited to stay for a while in that space and be would be able to sense some sort of different reality or relive the memory.

People often misinterpret themselves as their thoughts. Instead of being the observers they become the victims of their own thoughts. My goal is to explore and translate the disconnection between the unconsciousness and awareness, between the thoughts and the observer.

This work is about energy and feeling expressed by colour and mark making. My goal is to translate the sense of personhood in the imaginary place with a narrative which is open to viewer’s interpretation.
